Kutubu Convention Centre
Designed to meet the requirements of the host venue for the 2018 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference, Kutubu is more than a legacy project. It was important for this complex to become a source of pride for the people of Papua New Guinea and reflect the diversity of their tribal cultures.
Set in a sloping former quarry site in Port Moresby, the Kutubu Convention Centre forms part of Star Mountain Plaza, an integrated mixed-use precinct comprising two hotels, retail, workspaces, restaurants and bars, and a multi-purpose cultural facility.
The materials, colours and patterns of the interiors of Kutubu pay homage to Papua New Guinea’s traditional measure of currency, the cowrie shell, as well as the region’s landscape and indigenous crafts. The project features STONEKAST wall cladding in the custom Franklin Aggregate, using two textures (Etch and Honed) to achieve subtle contrast.
